Commonwealth Autism Services developed the Fusion Formula to give families, providers, and support teams a structured, proven way to create safety plans that actually work. It’s not a checklist. It’s a framework that brings everything together and puts the individual at the center.
WHAT IS THE FUSION FORMULA
Most approaches to home safety treat everyone the same. The Fusion Formula doesn’t. It’s the only system that looks at autism home safety from a truly global perspective — one that accounts for the unique needs of the individual, not just the hazards in the room.
The formula brings together four essential components and fuses them into one cohesive, individualized safety plan. Every component matters. None of them work as well on their own.
The four components of the Fusion Formula
1. Individual Needs
Every safety plan starts with the person. The Fusion Formula begins by building a clear picture of the individual, their behaviors, sensory profile, communication style, and the specific ways autism affects how they interact with their environment. No two plans look the same because no two people are the same.
2. Short-Term Solutions
Some safety concerns need to be addressed right now. Short-term solutions are the immediate modifications, barriers, and interventions that can be put in place quickly to reduce risk while a longer-term plan is developed.
3. Long-Term Solutions
Lasting safety requires more than quick fixes. Long-term solutions focus on skill-building, behavioral strategies, environmental modifications, and systems that grow with the individual over time.
4. Collaboration
Home safety isn’t the job of one person. The Fusion Formula brings together the full support team including family members, providers, educators, and clinicians so everyone is working from the same plan and reinforcing the same goals.
